proper way end a relationshipRelationships are great, aren’t they? Being with someone who gets you and does everything they can to make you happy is something we all deserve. Unfortunately, not all of us are lucky enough to find that special someone on our first try. When you’re not head over heels with your partner, it’s a sure sign that you have to terminate the relationship. Staying with someone that doesn’t fulfill you in every way is a recipe for disaster. The longer you stay in a relationship like this, the more miserable you become. Not only that, you’re also making the inevitable breakup that much more painful for both parties involved. If you’ve labeled your partner as someone you don’t want to spend the rest of your life with, you need to act fast. No sense in delaying the inevitable. It won’t get any easier so suck it up and do what’s right! For his/her sake and especially your own.

Now that you’ve made the decision to end this fruitless union, you need a plan of action. If you’ve only been on a couple of dates, you really don’t owe this person much in terms of an explanation. You can simply call them up and let them know that it’s not working out for you and wish them the best! Don’t text though. Everyone deserves a phone call at the very least.

If you’ve been with your partner for a while and consider each other boyfriend and girlfriend, a phone call obviously won’t cut it. We need to do this face to face. Unless you’re a heartless b@st@rd (or b1tch), this is surely going to sting but you’re going to get through it. Let your partner know that you need to see them. There’s a reason people use the “we need to talk” line. It helps. What this does is prepare them for the looming axe. People tend to take bad news better when they’ve been prepped for it. Don’t go through everything that’s wrong with him or her when breaking up with them, instead, let them know how incompatible you think the two of you are and why this simply is not going to work out. Making them aware of their downfalls only makes it more difficult for them to swallow. Also, you don’t want to tarnish someone’s confidence level. Be a decent human being and let them walk away with their dignity and confidence intact. This will allow them to move on and find someone sooner.

After you’ve parted ways, you may have the urge to see them again in a few days or weeks, this is quite common. It’s okay to miss an ex. Especially in the first weeks, months. But you have to remember why you broke it off and everything that made you unhappy. You might also be tempted by your ex to get together for a cup of coffee. We all know coffee is the last thing on the menu when getting together with your ex. Stay strong!

Remember that no matter how you approach this, it’s going to be painful for everyone involved. The least you can do is be respectful. She or he might not see this right away because they’re hurting, but in time they’ll accept the fact and they’ll also thank you for being a gentleman or lady about the whole thing.

If you’re married, lawyer up! That’s the only advice I got!

Best of luck to all of you and be strong. Remember, once this dead-end relationship is behind you, you can start looking for that special someone that’s out there and is everything you’ve ever dreamt of. That’s something each and every one of us deserves. Now go out there and break some hearts!
